Weston super Mare golf course has seen a radical change in the last week!

Members and visitors can now play the course from tees that suit their ability rather than their gender.

Traditionally, most English golf courses use White and Yellow tees for Men and Red tees for Ladies. From now on, the tees represent the length and difficulty of the course and are Black for the back tees, Purple for the middle tees and Green for the forward/shorter tees. Men can play from all three tees and Ladies from either the Purple or Green tees. We are one of a few courses in Somerset to offer these more inclusive playing conditions.

Unlike previously, Junior Boys (particularly those new to golf) can now play from the forward Green tees which are more suited to their ability until they are capable of playing from the longer Purple or Black tees. Also senior men who have previously been restricted to play from the longer back and middle tees, can now use the forward Green tees which should increase their enjoyment of the game and make the course more playable for them.

The Golf Club’s Handicapping Systems have been updated so that all players can submit scores against the new tees. Although the course itself has not changed very much, there have been some small adjustments to the Course Ratings to reflect the findings of the Somerset County Rating team, who recently assessed the course.

The Club hopes that these changes will encourage more local people to think about coming to play our 130 year-old links course, enjoy the famous hospitality of this friendly and inclusive Club and maybe consider joining us as members.

Various members have helped with this project but particular thanks must go to Sue and Clive Stilwell who have lead the project and input a massive amount of their time.
